In the first of our profiles on Independent retailers, we spoke to Helen Hulston. Helen is the face behind ‘Helen Hulston Contemporary Jewellery and Giftware’ which can be found in the beautifully restored Victorian Shopping Mall, The Great Western Arcade.

What makes your store unique?

We like to stock something that little bit different, with designer creativity and individuallity shining through.

How did you start your independent store?

I originally trained in jewellery at the School of Jewellery, Birmingham some 23 years ago. After working in jewellery and giftware retailing, I then worked in this jewellery store for 10 years when it was owned by Diane Cross Designs. In August 2004, when the previous owners retired, I had the opportunity to take over the store and proceeded to rename and refit it, while keeping many of the same endearing features and established designers work

What is your favourite piece in store now?

With the popularity of charm bracelets, I think everyone should have one of these from Lovelinks.  However, they always say diamonds are a girl’s best friend!

What influences you?

My influences mmm, that’s a tricky question. I love something classic that can stand the test of time, but have a very eccentric flare to be outrageously different, so I suppose you could say anything goes!

Why do you think Birmingham has Style?

Birmingham certainly has lots of style and I think this is due to the eclectic mix of shops within the city centre, there’s something for everyone.
