FASHION WORLD MOURNS McQUEEN
The world of fashion has been rocked following the death of designer Alexander McQueen, aged just 40. He was found dead at his London apartment. The tragedy comes less than a week before New York Fashion Week and as he was due to unveil his new collection.
Often referred to as the enfant terrible of fashion, Lee McQueen – he used his middle name Alexander for his collections – was renowned as one of the boldest and most fearless creators of couture.
An official statement on his website said: “On behalf of Lee McQueen’s family, Alexander McQueen today announces the tragic news that Lee McQueen, the founder and designer of the Alexander McQueen brand, has been found dead at his home. At this stage it is inappropriate to comment on this tragic news beyond saying that we are devastated and are sharing a sense of shock and grief with Lee’s family.”
As one of Britain’s most progressive talents, he was a four-time winner of Fashion Designer of the Year and was awarded a CBE for his work. He succeeded John Galliano at Givenchy before becoming Creative Director at Gucci and then launching his own label in 2007. In Birmingham, his lines are stocked at Harvey Nichols and Selfridges and are now expected to become collector’s items.
Averyl Oates, Buying Director at Harvey Nichols, paid tribute to McQueen: “”This is devastating news. He was an innovator and visionary who paved the way for taking a dream and making it a reality. Since his graduation he has touched every facet of the industry. From Givenchy through to his own collections, we supported him from the beginning and have watched him grow to the fashion force that he has become today. He will be dearly missed.”
Anne Pitcher, Selfridges Buying Director, added: ”We are all devastated at the loss of one of the most creative forces the fashion world has ever known. From the beginning he has astonished us with his vision and his energy. Our world will be a less beautiful place without him.”
